[TDF Newsletter] [TDF-2006-03] For the human Right to Space Travel!
Dear Coplanetaries,
first of all let me introduce the constitutional initiative that Technologies of the Frontier, together with Space Future, decide to run, in order that a clause for the human right to space travel was included into the future European Constitution, the US Constitution, and all the Constitutions which take human dignity and freedom as primary values:
RIGHT TO SPACE - a constitutional clause draft

Following the evolutionary and technological success of humankind to date, we recognise that the planet of our birth, our beloved Earth, is becoming unable to shelter and provide maximum scope to all the humans living on it. Consequently the limits of our planet are coming to represent a serious obstacle to universal enjoyment of the fundamental right to freedom, which the Constitution recognises as the supreme good and the first inalienable right of every human being. The finite scale of the geographic, material and energetic resources of our planet increasingly set inescapable limits to the possibilities of social and economic progress of individuals and of communities. This situation would cause progressive reduction of fundamental human freedoms if human civilisation was to remain confined to our native planet, including the freedom to procreate, to achieve to the best of our the abilities, to better the living conditions of our children and to seek happiness through honest hard work in a context of increasing civilisation, democracy, comfort and mutual respect. Thus we propose to insert in the Constitution the following clause:
'The Constitution recognises the sacred and inalienable right of every inhabitant of Earth to travel from Earth to Space, to the Moon and to any celestial body, as well as to return to his or her own country or other countries on the Earth, while preserving all of their rights as a terrestrial citizen.
The Constitution promotes the development of all the conditions necessary to make such a right effective.'

I anticipate hereafter some topics of the editorial you can find online.
A very authoritative warning has come from the British economist Nicholas Stern, ex-executive of the World Bank, that foresees a decrease of the 20% of the world economic product due to the climatic changes for the worst scenery. A cost calculated around the 5,5 trilions of Euros, if the problem won't be faced in decisive way within the next ten years. It is perhaps the first time that economy pronounced in such clear way on the environmental and resources problems. And such position makes the pair with the declarations recently released by the great mathematician Stephen Hawking in occasion of a congress in Hong Kong. For the human kind and for its survival -- Hawking said -- it is important to displace itself in Space. The destiny of humanity will depend on its ability to colonize new worlds, compatible, at least partly, with our demands. Our planet is not a sure place anymore where to proliferate for human species, and in general for life itself: various threats, from that atomic bomb, to the climatic changes, they allow to suppose that, in not so long time, planet Earth won't be anymore habitable for humans.
One only planet is not enough for our development. And the sharp dicotomy between the insuppressible demand of economic development and the danger that the development indeed represents for the environment and for the availability of resources of our mother planet, should jump more and more by now in evident way.
Can thus the reason prevail? Yes, if it will know how to detect the alternative road, logic and evident, to relaunch the development, at ever previously experimented levels, and at the same time to relieve the human encumbrance on the planet: the Road of Space.
The fact that today economists and great philosophers come up to specify the criticism of the situation, let�s me well hope, despite everything!
In the number 2/2006 of TDF you can find a series of articles, all targeted to try to make things clear on the philosophical-political knot of the so-called space option:

Closing these brief notes, I repeat the invitation to sign and to make sign our constitutional proposal: we have to collect thousands of signatures, and then to present the proposal, first of all for the insertion in the European Constitution.
All of you are inivited to be carriers of this proposal near the respective national governments: let's make that they listen to us, and that the 7 billion humans populating this planet (the true addressee of our proposal) listen to us!
