Make the Martian creatures Barsoomian animals, and
find out if any of the hoaxees read Edgar Rice
Burroughs (in which case they will recognize the
calots, banths, thoats, abandoned city, etc.). The
penultimate encounter is with a fifteen foot tall,
four armed green man with tusks (and carrying swords),
the ultimate encounter is with John Carter, Warlord of
Mars. By this time, they should all have figured out
that this is a hoax, and it will generate publicity
for the John Carter of Mars movie that Paramount is
supposedly making.
I still think it is an intrinsically cruel thing to
do, but hey, at least this way they go for broke and
have a movie tie-in.
