Each one of these reasons actually has a page or so of discussion
devoted to it in Howerton's book. This list is just a very brief outline:

I. The Vision - space is exciting
II. The Economic Argument - space development
     creates an ever-growing economy.
III. The Environmental Argument - protect home planet
     by developing space resources.
IV. The Education Argument - use space to make
     learning interesting.
V. The Political Argument - remove competition
     for finite resources.
VI. The Historical Argument - economic and
     technological advances result from expansion.
VII. The Frontier Argument - frontiers provide hope,
room to grow, substitute for war.
VIII. The Cosmic Argument - "Because we are here."
IX. The New Mythology - maintain a sense of wonder.
X. The Fear - Entropy sucks.
XI. The Hope - It is our nature to move outward.
