: The space industry is a sector with significant growth potential.
: Development of space applications can contribute to meet societal
: needs in a wide range of areas including: the environment,
: agriculture, sustainable development, communications networks,
: climate change, natural disaster management, education, healthcare,
: transportation and infrastructure development. Though the
: applications are wide-ranging, the development of commercially
: viable applications has proved very difficult.

: The OECD International Futures Program has proposed a project to
: examine the possibilities and the roles public and private actors
: may play in the next thirty years of space industry growth. The
: specific objectives of the project are to assess the long term
: prospects of the sector, examine promising applications, identify
: catalyst factors for growth, identify necessary supportive measures,
: and define what measures governments may take to provide a framework
: for growth and development in space. The project?s report will be
: published in 2004.

: Pierre-Alain Schieb will present the specifics of the project and
: its implications for future application and potential project
: involvement for public and private parties, as well as any findings
: to-date.

: Pierre-Alain Schieb is the program director of the OECD
: International Futures Program, of the Advisory Unit to the Secretary
: General. Mr. Schieb, a French citizen, previously worked in

: MSc in quantitative marketing from Sherbrooke University, Canada.

Of course a Euro would see commercial space as a distant goal, rather
than as a current necessity. Not that a similar view isn't held by
most NASA management.
